During fire emergencies, if an aerial intervention
is deemed to be necessary from the Italian Fire Department and Woodland
Guard, a formal request is sent to the COAU bureau of the Civil
Protection (United Operative Aerial Center). The bureau is responsible
for the choice of the most appropriate air machine to use. If a
CANADAIR® CL-415 is requested, SOREMs Operative Coordination
department will be informed and the nearest aircraft will immediately
take off and hit the fire area.

Currently, SOREMs firefighting fleet is composed
of 13 CANADAIR® aircrafts of which five will be equipped with
a new special substance spreader system that will prevent hydrocarbon
pollution.

The aircraft fills up water from lakes, rivers or
sea surfaces (usually the nearest water area from the fire) at about
6000 litres every 12 seconds, and attains the operative zone; then
continues to furnish and drop until the fire is under control.
