Kafiristan,
Paropamisos, Bolor, Daraddesha, Dardistan, Po-lü
are some of the names that have been given in the
past to the remote mountain areas of the Hindu
Kush and Karakoram that this book calls Peristan,
a legendary, poetical place-name, meaning
"land of the fairies", in homage to the
invisible creatures who, according to local
belief, haunt the peaks of this region. An
imaginative title for a strictly scientific work
of research, by two members of the Italian
Institute for Africa and the Orient (IsIAO,
former IsMEO of Giuseppe Tucci).
