PRAYER IN JANUARY

His path may be all flowers,
my Lord, in that dim hour
when skin back to the dust
and soul back to the kingdom
he will have to entrust,
when he hears roll the drum
that calls him to move on
where stars shine all day long

Once crossed that trodden bridge,
he’ll leave his heavy baggage
and he’ll be welcomed in
as all the suicides will
to a Paradise within
where his heart will be filled.
There’s no such thing as hell
where love and mercy dwell.

May he reach salvation
just as at that last station
he’ll lead in white procession
a thousand ashen faces,
may he rejoin the nation
of those who died disgraced
who showed a fearless mind
to God and to mankind

May you not be displeased
right-thinkers, when to appease
the tearful, pale with ache
God will send his compassion
which all saints will partake
for they did not fear action
they deemed death better fate
than ignorance and hate

You, God of mercy and love
made that heaven above
especially for those
who could not find a smile
for those whose paths oppose
sellouts and all that’s vile
to hell I’m sure will wade
just those who are afraid

There is no better man
to advise you on our plans
our weaknesses, our sins
that cry out for salvation
his voice sings in the wind
give ear to his expressions
Please listen to his voice
dear God, you will rejoice

Please listen to his voice
dear God, you will rejoice
