THE ARCHITECT

I chose to dare / for this new town
arches and squares and corners round
this empty ground / shows shapes anew
every new day

My masons say / they are so glad
that their hard labour turned out fab
kids and their dads / and mummies too
walk, talk and play

There where silence held sway supreme
a perfect city has appeared

Stones from lands far / sculpted with skill
in shapes of gargoyles, statues, sills
this church will fill / with scented swirls
and holy vows

I chose this hill / close to the sun
so gifts of silver would be done
gods have begun / to spread their pearls
lower their brows

there where laurels waved to quiet dreams
a perfect temple has appeared

Our natives here / do as I did
walls of clay seared and dry straw lids
that’s my best bid / to build a hut
to shelter food

Now my technique / has spread so wide
cabins use knitted reeds and hides
no monsoon slides / no sand build-ups
dwellings are good

there where shrublands stretch crossed by streams
a perfect village has appeared

With the best tools
a perfect village has appeared
Subvert the rules
a perfect temple has appeared
Set your own school
a perfect city has appeared
