Stone Fruit breeding
Very
good taste and quality traits are strongly required in the new licensed
varieties.
In
the last years we patented several new peach and nectarine varieties:
-
LOLITA
(30 days before Redhaven, circ. 132 mm, better performance than Maycrest).
-
GRETA (4
days after Redhaven, white flesh,
circ.
238 mm, excellent and aromatic taste).
-
MARILYN
(36 days after Redhaven,
circ. 192 mm, excellent taste better performance
than Fayette).
-
GILDA
ROSSA (52 days after Redhaven,
circ. 205 mm, excellent taste, better performance than O'Henry).
Flat peach series:
Flat peaches are from immemorial
time locally cultivated in
Sicily. After 15 years of breeding work we selected several seedlings
without defects (such as cracking at the base of the fruit causing exudates
and shortness of the penducle causing a partial skin detachment at picking).
We named them UFO distinguished by the numbers depending on the ripening
time.

"GHIACCIO" new type peach varieties:
“Ghiaccio” (Ice) distinguished by the numbers 1, 2, 3 depending on the
ripening time. They are very similar and have in common the following
characteristics:
-
Hairless skin.
-
Skin and flesh are totally white-cream
coloured, without any pigment.
-
Flesh is very firm, juicy, with texture
similar but not equal to clingstone peach.
-
Flavour is good, aromatic, with very high sugar content
(Brix:13°–22°).
-
Fruits are very resistant to
handling.
-
Fruits can remain fully ripe on the tree for a period
of 25 days without loosing flesh
firmness or changing sugar content.
-
Harvesting can be carried out either
all at once, or over a period of 25 days.

Rootstocks
The
Dept. of Genetic and
Fruit Breeding released in 1995 two new
stone fruit rootstocks suitable for peach, nectarines, apricot and plum:
-
TETRA is
an European plum type suitable for any kind of soil, it does not
produce
suckers,
it induces
good productivity
and
excellent yield efficiency;
it
is normally
propagated by vitroculture or by hardwood cuttings. It is resistant to root
knoot nematodes and moderately resistant to Pratilenchus vulnus.
-
PENTA is also an European plum type suitable for any kind of soil,
it does not produce
suckers, it induces
good productivity and
excellent yield efficiency. It
is resistant to Verticillium dahliae. It is normally propagated by
vitroculture
or by hardwood cuttings.
