PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME

 

This Palace has been completely restored to hold important statues, splendid floor mosaics from Roman Villas, and the reconstruction of entire frescoed rooms of the Villa of Livia. There is also an extremely rich numismatic collection. At the end of the visit walk to nearby Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built in 1566 by Michelangelo who cleverly adapted the ancient tepidarium of the Baths; it was restored and the orientation changed by L. Vanvitelli in 1749. The façade is formed by the exedra of one of the rooms of the Baths. The Basilica is located in Piazza della Repubblica, a fine square occupying the area of the central exedra of the Diocletian Baths, in the centre is the lively Fountain of the Najads, overlooking the colossal remains of the Terme di Diocleziano
