Everything in New Zealand seemed
to be picturesque.
One of the highlights of the trip
was a day in Abel Tasman National Park, ...
ending with a four-hour walk,
opening onto vistas like this ...
and this.
Everyone knows the kiwi fruit.
But have you ever heard of the kiwano?
Due to bad weather on the Cook
Straits, we ended up taking a flight from the South Island to Wellington,
on the North Island. This is our pilot, heading toward our aircraft.
Not a joke.

Wellington is the capital, but
it also hosts one of the most beautiful displays of begonias that
you are likely to see ...
in the Botanical Gardens overlooking
the city.
From Wellington we rented a car.
The thermal areas that abound are a constant reminder of the volcanic
activity that lies under your feet. This one is near Taupo.
Rotorua. The former government-run
treatment baths, now the local museum.
Another thermal area, this one
near Rotorua and inhabited by a Maori village. At least there are
no heating bills to pay.
And there is always hot water
for the tub (these really are the village's public bathing facilities).
